When you choose a symbolic coral adoption, you generously support Innoceana’s Costa Rican conservation efforts. This symbolic adoption doesn’t mean that you have any ownership of the coral.
Yes. All contributions to Innoceana, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization, are tax-deductible to THE full extent of the law. This applies only in the US.
Our research program focuses on studying the immune system of corals. Some corals exhibit greater resilience to adverse conditions, such as higher temperatures, earning them the title of “super corals.” These corals hold secrets that we are striving to unravel at our immunology laboratory in Ojochal.
The Innoceana research program will continue for as long as necessary to save the corals. You can expect to receive regular updates (every 2 to 3 months), and within a year of your adoption, we will provide immunology insights. In other words, your subscription will continue until you choose to cease supporting our program.
Corals are vital components of ocean ecosystems, having existed long before humans. They provide numerous ecosystem services, including food, coastal protection, and habitats for marine biodiversity. With coral reefs disappearing rapidly, it is imperative to preserve them to maintain balance in ecosystems and the world as we know it.
By integrating 3D modeling technology with immunology studies, Innoceana aims to understand coral evolution and resilience to adverse conditions, such as the “El Niño 2023-2024” event. We seek to uncover why certain corals can withstand challenging environments and leverage this knowledge for coral restoration and preservation.
Unfortunately, coral mortality is likely. In such cases, we will select a similar coral to continue our research. The new coral will be tagged, given a name of your choosing and modelled accordingly.
No, the majority of our research is non-intrusive. For immunology sampling, we carefully extract a very small piece of the coral using techniques that do not cause any harm or damage to the coral itself.
