Welcome to our new Protect a Coral program, where you can play a leading role in coral conservation in Costa Rica! Join us in the journey of building hope for the future of corals and optimizing their restoration for climate resilience.

JOURNEY OF THE CORAL

Despite recent global bleaching events (“El Niño”), our team has investigated 112 corals that remain healthy and vibrant. These corals appear to have stronger immune systems, allowing them to tolerate harsh environmental conditions. conditions.

FAQ ´S

WHAT DOES "PROTECT A CORAL" MEAN?

When you join the Protect a Coral program, you generously support Innoceana’s Costa Rican conservation efforts.

IS THIS TAX DEDUCTIBLE IN THE US?

Yes. All contributions to Innoceana, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization, are tax-deductible to THE full extent of the law. This applies only in the US.

WHAT ARE THE INMUNOLOGY OF THE CORAL?

Our research program focuses on studying the immune system of corals. Some corals exhibit greater resilience to adverse conditions, such as higher temperatures. These corals possess unique immune traits that we are studying at our immunology laboratory in Ojochal.

HOW LONG DOES THIS SUBSCRIPTION LAST?

The Innoceana research program will continue for as long as necessary to save the corals. You can expect to receive regular updates (every 2 to 3 months), and within a year of supporting coral restoration efforts, we will provide immunology insights. In other words, your subscription will continue until you choose to cease supporting our program.

WHY IS SUPPORTING THIS RESEARCH IMPORTANT?

Corals are vital components of ocean ecosystems, having existed long before humans. They provide numerous ecosystem services, including food, coastal protection, and habitats for marine biodiversity. With coral reefs disappearing rapidly, it is imperative to preserve them to maintain balance in ecosystems and the world as we know it.

WHY IS THIS RESEARCH INNOVATIVE?

By integrating 3D modeling technology with immunology studies, Innoceana aims to understand coral evolution and resilience to adverse conditions, such as the “El Niño 2023-2024” event. We seek to uncover why certain corals can withstand challenging environments and leverage this knowledge for coral restoration and preservation.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE CORAL DIES DURING THIS PROGRAM JOURNEY?

Unfortunately, coral mortality is likely. In such cases, we will select a similar coral to continue our research. The new coral will be tagged, given a name of your choosing and modelled accordingly.

DOES ANY CORAL GET HARMED DURING THE RESEARCH?

No, the majority of our research is non-intrusive. For immunology sampling, we carefully extract a very small piece of the coral using techniques that do not cause any harm or damage to the coral itself.
