LOS
JARDINEROS
DEL MAR
LOS JARDINEROS DEL MAR is Innoceana’s initiative to restore and protect the seagrass meadows of Tenerife. Through active restoration efforts, we aim to restore these underwater gardens, strengthen marine biodiversity, and bring life back to one of theisland’s most valuable ecosystems.
2025: Expanding Knowledge to Restore the Ocean’s Meadows
In 2025, Los Jardineros del Mar focuses on assessing ecosystem health, identifying resilient donor areas, and studying the environmental factors that shape Tenerife’s seagrass meadows. The knowledge gained will guide restoration efforts and raise awareness of seagrass’s vital role in biodiversity, carbon capture, and coastal resilience.

OUR MAIN GOAL is to create the greatest possible positive
impact on the marine environment. At Innoceana, we are
developing a low-impact restoration protocol for Cymodocea nodosa that can be replicated across the Canary Islands.
And OUR LONG-TERM VISION? To build a dedicated seagrass laboratory where we can germinate and grow new seedlings, planting them directly without removing them from other areas.

															Education and citizen science
Los Jardineros del Mar engages the local community in protecting and restoring seagrass meadows. Through workshops, volunteers learn about the ecosystem services these habitats provide, take part in monitoring activities, and collect valuable ecological data.
Meet the Seagrass Tracker: a platform where anyone can report seagrass wash-ups along the coast. This helps predict healthy plant arrivals and guides low-impact restoration by replanting naturally detached fragments.
The community takes an active role in reviving seagrass meadows.

Innoceana ha recibido una subvención nominativa del Área de Gestión del Medio Natural, Sostenibilidad, Seguridad y Emergencias para la ejecución del proyecto “Los Jardineros del Mar”, por importe de 40.000,00 euros.

Building on previous work, 2024 saw a second experimental
transplant of Cymodocea nodosa using Innoceana’s innovative
technique. This method could boosts plant survival and offers a
foundation to tackle seagrass loss in the Canary Islands and beyond.

Two pilot campaigns for Cymodocea nodosa transplantation were
carried out, showcasing innovative restoration techniques. The results were presented in 2024 at the Marine Forest Scientific Seminar in Mallorca and in 2025 at the 2nd European Seagrass Restoration Workshop in Arcachon, France, highlighting the project’s role in advancing marine ecosystem restoration.

Los Jardineros del Mar began Innoceana’s journey to restore Tenerife’s seagrass meadows and recover lost coverage. After years of monitoring these habitats and identifying threats, the project started with a pilot transplant, laying the foundation for the rehabilitation of these vital ecosystems.
