GOAL AND IMPACT
The Junior Blue Warrior Education Program gives local youth of all backgrounds the opportunity to become marine conservationists and master scuba divers. By making ocean education accessible to everyone, we can improve community development and create the next generation of ocean leaders. The program includes a series of highly engaging marine conservation workshops and field trips delivered in both Spanish and English. During these sessions, children learn how to reduce their carbon footprint, how to protect sea animals, and how to become marine conservationists in their communities. We also bring this program directly to schools and community centers throughout the Southern Pacific zone through free workshops and event.
WHO WE ARE
Innoceana is an international marine conservation nonprofit with a mission to preserve the ocean. Through our network of marine conservation centers, we create innovative programs and educate coastal communities to be part of the solution. As part of our commitment to education, we proudly launched a youth development program in Costa Rica called the Junior Blue Warrior education program, serving children ages 4 and up.
THE CURRENT PROBLEM
Although Costa Rica is a small country, it contains more than 6% of the world’s biodiversity. Historically, the country has promoted environmentally forward policies, yet much of the population still lacks a basic literacy of the ocean and the issues challenging it, from overfishing to pollution to a changing climate. Young people from many coastal communities rely on employment in the hospitality and construction sectors, which ironically rely on the health of the ocean to continue attracting visitors. Through the Junior Blue Warrior education program, we provide local youth with the tools to be ocean advocates, local leaders, and to pursue careers as ocean scientists, divers and innovators.
