WATER QUALITY ELEMENTS IN KOH TAO

It’s calculated that the ocean contains 1.332 million cubic kilometers of salt water. This immense mass of water is home to such a vast quantity of life that even today we still know little about. The ocean makes life possible for every species on the planet, it is our true home. As Innoceana believes in the importance of the quality and health of these waters, we have launched our pilot project on Koh Tao, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand. We are measuring specific environmental parameters in the water such as temperature, PH, salinity, turbidity, phosphates, nitrates, and oxygen. With our findings and using citizen science by involving other dive schools around the island, we are creating a database that will serve as a baseline for monitoring climate change. To date, we have already found and recorded two dead zones around the island.

SEA CURRENTS MONITORING IN KOH TAO

Marine currents are key when it comes to understanding the behavior of our oceans and its inhabitants. There are horizontal, ascending and even descending currents, as well as combinations of the three. Marine currents are a complex occurrence and they influence the temperature, weather, the acceleration of the Coriolis Effect, and wind and storms… Innoceana, in collaboration with the laboratory of HRL Ports, has created a submergible system called “CurrentsFinderBuoy” that enables the study of surface currents on Koh Tao, information very useful in understanding the accumulation of plastics in local waters. This analysis also uses a flow meter to profile the currents. Ocean wide, currents are changing, an effect of climate change which is affecting the life of our seas.

WEATHER STATION

This year, Innoceana arrived in Koh Tao with a weather station. Built in Spain with the help of the HRL port laboratory, this is the first weather station in Koh Tao history. Today this station is taking data in Cahlok Bay, which is located on the Southern tip of the island. Parameters monitored include: wind velocity and direction, atmospheric pressure, and atmospheric quality (kg CO2 equivalent). Meteorology has a direct influence over our oceans and is a key indicator of climate change.

CONSERVATION DIVER KIT

Inncoeana believes in the revolutionary change from the traditional idea of “fun diving” or recreation diving into conservation diving. We really believe that, despite conservation being hard work, it is much a more hands-on, rewarding experience. Conservation diving provides divers with the change to leave the ecosystem better than they found it and to have a positive impact on the environment. Quality conservation programs not only benefit the reefs but also teach divers a lot about the local organisms and provide suggestions about how to act sustainably.

MAPPING SYSTEM

Geographic information systems are to date one of the tools that have most helped in conservation. Innoceana believes that maps are crucial in good environmental planning. Using a GPS system, Innoceana is making maps of artificial reefs and other submerged structures around Koh Tao.
